Water gun cup race

PREPARATION TIME: 15 minutes | AGE: 2 - 3 years old



MATERIALS:

  • Plastic cups

  • Optional: Colorful tape

  • Thin rope/yarn

  • Scissors

  • Crafts knife

  • Water guns

  • Water

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Use a crafts knife to make a hole in the center of the plastic cup.

  2. Thread a long piece of yarn through the cup.

  3. Cut the two ends of the yarn so that they reach two faraway points and tie them to those points.

  4. Fill a water gun with water.

  5. Bring the cup close to one end of the yarn.

  6. Encourage the child to squirt water inside the cup, pushing it toward the opposite end.

  7. For added fun, tie more cups on their individual yarns and turn it into a competition.

  8. If you like, decorate the cups with colorful tape.

 

DEVELOPMENT AREAS:

  1. FINE MOTOR SKILLS: The child will enhance their hand-eye coordination and precision while squirting water into the cup.

  2. GROSS MOTOR SKILLS: Pulling and moving the water gun, as well as tugging the yarn to propel the cup, will aid in developing their gross motor abilities.

  3. FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION: The child will need to concentrate on aiming the water gun and controlling the cup's movement, improving their attention span.

  4. PROBLEM-SOLVING: They will encounter challenges in directing the cup along the yarn, promoting problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

  5. COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS: If multiple cups are used for competition, it encourages interaction, communication, and friendly competition with others.

  6. PATIENCE AND PERSEVERANCE: As the child practices getting the cup to the finish line, they will learn patience and perseverance when faced with obstacles.

  7. IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY: The activity allows for creativity when decorating the cups, fostering imagination and self-expression.
