Personalised travel adventure map

PREPARATION TIME: 5 minutes | AGE: 1.5 - 3 years old+

Setting clear expectations, having a well-defined roadmap, and engaging in open communication not only bring us together as a family but also create a sense of ease and comfort in our journey.

To prevent the dread of a "Are we there yet?" scenario during our first long car trip, we devised a simple yet effective method to help our son understand and remember trip details. Our aim was to make him feel excited about traveling and exploring the world with us, rather than anxious or unsure.

Here's our approach for trips lasting two days or more, with multiple stops:

MATERIALS:

  • Computer

  • Printer

  • Photos or images of your stops, people you'll meet, accommodations, and experiences on the trip.

  • Optional: drawing materials (e.g., markers, pens).

  • Laminator or a plastic pouch for paper

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Create your route in Google Maps and take a screenshot of it.

  2. Collect photos or images representing each destination, whether it's landmarks, attractions, family members, or friends you'll meet during the trip.

  3. Using a graphic design software or by hand, place the images onto the printed map.

  4. Once you're satisfied with the design, print the map. To make it more durable and travel-friendly, laminate the map to protect it from wear and tear during the trip.

  5. Sit down with your child or travel companions days or weeks before the trip. Walk them through the personalized travel adventure map. Share the exciting details of each destination, the people they'll meet, and the experiences they'll have.

DEVELOPMENT AREAS:

  1. REDUCING ANXIETY: Clear expectations and preparation provided our child with a sense of security, easing any anxiety or uncertainty about what awaited him.

  2. BUILDING TRUST: When we communicate openly and honestly about what lies ahead, we build trust. Trust is crucial in a parent-child relationship and fosters a sense of safety and security.

  3. ENHANCING COOPERATION: When children know what is expected of them, they are more likely to cooperate and follow instructions. This can lead to smoother transitions and better behavior.

  4. PROMOTING BETTER UNDERSTANDING: Clear communication about upcoming events or changes allows children to process the information and understand what will happen. It gives them time to ask questions and seek clarification.

  5. ENCOURAGING INDEPENDENCE: By preparing kids for what's to come, we empower them to handle situations more independently. When they know what to expect, they can feel more confident and self-reliant.

  6. MANAGING CHALLENGING SITUATIONS: If there are potential difficulties or unfamiliar experiences, preparing children beforehand can help them cope better and reduce the chances of meltdowns or emotional outbursts.

  7. ENHANCING BONDING: Open communication and preparation create opportunities for meaningful conversations and bonding between parents and children. It shows that we care about their feelings and value their input.

  8. IMPROVING OVERALL EXPERIENCE: When children have a clear roadmap of what's to come, they can look forward to positive experiences and enjoy the journey more.
